Album Info:During the years 1982-1988 my wife and I spent two weeks each summer hiking and sightseeing in Switzerland--when the dollar was worth about twice as much as it is now. I did not use the time for railfanning but since we used the Swiss Railpass for all travel there were opportunities for photos. This is a selection of general scenes - I may add locomotive shots later.

Description:  Gornegrat Station on August 9 - the view of the Matterhorn is perfect when the clouds dissipate. The frequency of clouds among the high peaks makes it difficult to get a clear view in the higher elevations. We never saw the top of the Matterhorn on our first visit to Zermatt but experienced several crystal clear days at other times.

Description:  The Furka Oberalp Railway uses a very steep ramp to reach Goschenen at the north portal of the 9 mile long Gotthard Tunnel (just below the end of the train). The FO mainline over the Furka Pass crosses the tunnel at a much higher elevation. This shuttle train is on a spur line from Andermatt for those wishing to make a connection with trains to Italy or the north.
