Album Info:This album features the CP's Noton-Chipman mixed train that drew fans from afar to see the line's 4-4-0's. I arrived at dusk in the small village of Norton, N.B. by a Canadian National train from St. John and spent the night in a guest house near the station. Early the next morning I was at the Canadian Pacific's one-stall engine house that stood within sight of the station. CP A2q 4-4-0 144 was being prepared for the daily mixed train to Chipman, 44.6 miles and about 3 hours away. I rode the mixed both ways, part way in 144's cab. She was built by the CP in 1886 and shared the work on the branch with A1e 4-4-0 29 built by the CP in 1887 and A1m 4-4-0 136 built by Rogers in 1883. All three were at work when the CP ran its first passenger train across Canada. 136 was in the engine house at Chipman and I had seen 76 year old 29 two days before at the McAdam backshop being prepared for a celebration. The pictures in this album give an impression of the round trip to Chipman when three 4-4-0's powered the branch because they were light enough for the bridges. All three have been preserved. Please, also see my other CP albums for pictures taken in Montreal and McAdam during my June 1959 trip.

COAL MINE SWITCHED BY CANADIAN PACIFIC 4-4-0
Title:  COAL MINE SWITCHED BY CANADIAN PACIFIC 4-4-0
Description:  Coal mines were major customers for the Norton-Chipman mixed train. Here Canadian Pacific A2q 4-4-0 144 picks-up a loaded hopper of coal. Before the CP lease the line was the New Brunswick Coal & Railway Co. A coal branch powered by elderly 4-4-0's is unusual to say the least.

THE YOUNGEST SISTER - CP 4-4-0 29 AT THE BACKSHOP
Title:  THE YOUNGEST SISTER - CP 4-4-0 29 AT THE BACKSHOP
Description:  Canadian Pacific A1e 4-4-0 29 was built by the CP's New Shops in 1887 and was the newest of the three 4-4-0's that powered the Norton-Chipman mixed train. I found her at the backshop at McAdam being fitted with a fake stack for a centennial celebration in Caribou, Maine across the border in a CP served town. Her elder sisters were handling the mixed train without her help.
