Ae 8/14 in Erstfeld Enginehouse |
Description: |
No. 11801's 16 drivers deliver a one hour horsepower rating of 11,100. The locomotive uses a Bucholi drive which employs a gear ouside the driver on one end of each driving axle. The locomotive was built in 1931 to reduce doubleheading on the Gotthard Tunnel route - from Erstfeld to the entrance of the Gotthard Tunnel is a climb of 2,080 feet in 18 miles. The tunnel is under more than 6,000 feet of solid rock. At 9 miles it is not the longest Swiss tunnel but it is the oldest major tunnel - opened 1/1/1882. The locomotive was operated on a regular revenue freight schedule at this date for the enjoyment of enthusiasts. |

11,100 Horsepower Swiss Ae8/14 on Freight |
Description: |
Only 3 locomotives of this wheel arrangement (2-4-2-4-2+2-4-2-4-2) were built - one each in 1931, 1932 and 1940. The design was intended to reduce double heading on the 2.75% grades climbed by Gotthard Tunnel freight and passenger trains but it was found more practical to build smaller units which could be MU'd. No.11801 had a one hour horsepower output of 11,100. It is pulling a freight on the Gotttard Tunnel Route. |

Swiss Federal Be 4/6 |
Description: |
Be 4/6 12303-12342 were built from 1920 to 1923. This is one of the locomotives used to electrify the Gotthard Tunnel route in 1922 after a coal shortage during the First World War made the Swiss turn away from steam locomotives. No. 12320 had a maximum speed of only about 50 mph and only an output of 2,200 hp but was a considerable improvement over the steam 4-6-0s, 2-8-0s and 2-10-0s. Jack-shafts are used to drive two four driver sets. The locomotive was withdrawn from ordinary service in 1976 but was still in scheduled use for the enjoyment of enthusiasts. |

Note the water crane for steam locomotives - although most swiss lines were electrified steam locomotives were held for certain services, particularly emergency needs if wires were down, etc. However by this date steam was gone and some diesels were available for emergencies or work trains. |
